System for recycling wastewater from municipal wastewater treatment plants
We offer a filtration module that is suitable for installation in urban wastewater
treatment plants and allows the reuse of wastewater for watering green public areas during dry periods. With the latest membrane technology, wastewater can be cleaned to the point where it can be reused (e.g. for watering public and agricultural areas, etc.) without the use of disinfectants. The device is modular and can be adapted to existing urban wastewater treatment plants.
The pressures of growing population, urbanization and consumption are related to the capacity of the water environment, so a circular economy model that deals with water reuse is actively being developed in the future. We consider the transition to a circular economy as an essential synergy for water reuse. After reviewing existing systems and regulations, we concluded that such a strategy must primarily ensure the safety of water reuse by taking into account water quality standards. At the same time, it should ensure the correct and reliable operation of water reuse systems.
Our development was based on modern municipal wastewater treatment, a combination of classic municipal wastewater treatment and additional treatment with membrane technology and ozone. This type of treatment can remove some remaining pollutants, which cannot be achieved in a classic treatment plant. Therefore, we developed a hybrid filtration device with an ozone generator, through which we filtered wastewater to remove some of the remaining pollution, including microplastics, total coliform bacteria and E. coli, and identified the suitability of the water for reuse (e.g. for irrigation of green areas, rinsing of treatment plant surfaces, washing roads and watering recreational areas).
The membrane is designed for high flow and has a negative charge, thus reducing the possibility of organic contamination and the development of microorganisms. It also offers a new approach to the possibility of additional treatment or the use of ozone for water disinfection and membrane cleaning at the same time.
The primary purpose of development was to obtain microplastic-free water, potentially useful for irrigation, from treated wastewater from a municipal biological treatment plant (outflow) by removing microplastics and harmful organisms such as coliform bacteria and E. coli.
The system included a ceramic membrane filter with the option of ozonation. We compared the effect of cleaning raw wastewater flowing to the treatment plant and the effect of cleaning wastewater from the treatment plant. We found that the system effectively removes suspended solids, microplastics and microorganisms in both cases. Since this system does not remove biodegradable substances, we focused on the sewage from the treatment plant in the following
research.
HYPER CITY system removed almost all suspended solids, microplastics and
microorganisms, such as coliform and E. coli bacteria. For the identification of microplastics, we used a system developed by us, which is based on special filtration and micrographic processing of the sample.
The removal effect was also studied using FT-IR spectroscopy. The results of the study showed that the HYPER CITY system removed 88% of all coliform bacteria and 93% of E.coli bacteria.
After additional ozonation of the filtered water, a 100% cleaning effect was achieved for coliform bacteria and 100% for E. coli. In both cases, all waste microplastics were removed in the treatment plant.
